Renew an Expired Driving Licence Online

Here’s how to renew your Driving Licence on the Sarathi portal, whether it’s about to expire or has already lapsed, including when a medical certificate is required.

Quick answer

Go to sarathi.parivahan.gov.in, select your state, and choose Apply for DL Renewal under the Driving Licence menu. Enter your DL number and date of birth, pick Renewal of DL from the eligible services shown, fill your details, upload any required documents, pay the fee, and print your receipt.

What you’ll need

  • Your Driving Licence number and date of birth. The portal accepts the DL number in several formats, so don’t worry about exact punctuation
  • Pick the RTO under your current present address, not necessarily the one that originally issued your DL
  • A Form 1A medical certificate from an empanelled doctor, only if you’re above 40 years old, or if your DL includes Transport category vehicles
  • Photo, signature and supporting documents, only asked for separately in some states

Step-by-step: renew your DL

  1. Go to the Sarathi portal and select your state

Open sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and pick your state.

  2. Choose “Apply for DL Renewal”

From the Driving Licence menu in the top nav, click the Apply for DL Renewal tile.

  3. Enter your DL number and date of birth

On the Application for Services on Driving Licence screen, enter your Driving Licence Number, Date of Birth and the captcha. The DL number is accepted in more than one format, for example if it’s RJ-14/DLC/00/91059, you can enter it as RJ14 20000091059, RJ1420000091059, RJ14 /2000/0091059 or RJ-1420000091059. Tick the privacy policy checkbox and click Proceed.

  4. Select “Renewal of DL” from your eligible services

After your DL number is accepted, the portal only shows the services your licence is actually eligible for. Pick Renewal of DL from that list.

  5. Fill Applicant/Request Details

Review and complete your personal and address details.

  6. Upload Documents, if required

Some states ask you to upload address or age proof at this stage.

  7. Upload Photo and Signature, if required

Only some states ask for this separately, others carry it forward from your existing DL record.

  8. Driving Licence Test Slot Booking, if applicable

This only appears if you’re combining your renewal with an Additional Endorsement to DL (AEDL), adding a new vehicle class. A plain renewal skips this step entirely.

  9. Payment of Fee

Review your application and pay the applicable fee. If your DL has already expired, this is where the late fee gets added.

  10. Verify the Pay Status

Confirm your payment is reflected against your application before moving on.

  11. Print the Receipt

Download and print your application receipt for your records.

What does renewing late actually cost?

The ₹1,000 late fee isn’t a one-time penalty, it’s charged for every year (or part of a year) since your grace period ended. Here’s how it stacks up on top of the base ₹300 after-grace renewal fee.

Time since grace period ended Additional late fee Total base renewal fee
Up to 1 year ₹1,000 ₹1,300
1–2 years ₹2,000 ₹2,300
2–3 years ₹3,000 ₹3,300
3–4 years ₹4,000 ₹4,300
4–5 years ₹5,000 ₹5,300

These are central base figures, states commonly add their own charges on top, so treat this as the floor. There’s no cap, the longer you wait, the more it costs. Not sure how late you are? Enter your expiry date in our validity checker.

Do you need a medical certificate (Form 1A)?

  • You’re renewing and you’re above 40 years old
  • You’re renewing and your DL includes Transport category vehicles

If either applies, you’ll need to visit an empanelled doctor during the application process to get Form 1A before your renewal can go through.

Your renewal moves ahead once the fee is confirmed against your application.

Your renewed DL is generated with a fresh validity period, ready to download or arriving by post depending on your state.

Medical certificate pending

If Form 1A applies to you, your renewal stays incomplete until it’s submitted.

Payment pending or failed

Your application stays incomplete until the fee clears. Retry on the same application.

Mistakes that slow this down

  • Selecting an RTO that doesn’t match your current present address jurisdiction
  • Skipping the Form 1A medical certificate when your age or vehicle category requires it
  • Expecting a test slot booking step for a plain renewal, it only appears if you’re also doing an AEDL
  • Waiting too long past expiry, the late fee grows with every year (or part of a year) of delay

Common questions

How much does it cost to renew an expired DL?

Under central rules (CMVR Rule 81), on-time renewal is ₹200. If you’ve missed the grace period, it becomes ₹300 plus ₹1,000 for every year (or part of a year) of delay since the grace period ended. States may add their own charges on top, confirm the final amount on Sarathi.

Do I need to take a driving test to renew?

No. A plain renewal doesn’t require a driving test or slot booking. That step only shows up if you’re also adding a new vehicle class (AEDL) alongside your renewal.

Which RTO should I select?

The one whose jurisdiction covers your current present address, it doesn’t need to be the RTO that originally issued your DL.

Can I renew and add a new vehicle class at the same time?

Yes, that’s an Additional Endorsement to DL (AEDL). Combining it with your renewal does bring back the driving test slot booking step.
