Mode

These are original practice questions, not the question bank of any state. The real test can differ in the number of questions, time and pass mark.

How the learner licence test works

The exact format depends on your state, so check the details on the Sarathi portal before you book.

You apply for a learner licence on the Sarathi portal and then take a computer-based test on road rules and signs. Depending on your state, the test is taken at the RTO or online from home.

The number of questions, the time allowed and the pass mark are set by each state. A learner licence is valid for 6 months, and you can generally apply for the permanent driving licence after 30 days of getting it.

Our learner licence guide covers how to apply, our slot booking guide shows how to book the test, and when you are ready for the next step, see how to apply for the permanent licence.

What the questions cover

The 108 questions are grouped into five topics, and you can practise them one at a time.

Road rules (30)

Keeping left, overtaking, turning, lane discipline, parking and priority at crossings and bridges.

Signs and signals (19)

Traffic lights, sign shapes and colours, and the hand signals drivers use.

Safe driving (32)

Night and fog driving, wet roads, safe distance, helmets, seat belts and staying alert.

Documents and law (15)

Licence age, learner licence rules, papers to carry, insurance and number plates.

Emergencies (12)

What to do after an accident, when a vehicle breaks down or catches fire, and how to give way to emergency vehicles.

Road sign shapes and colours at a glance

Even before you read a sign, its shape tells you what kind of sign it is.

Shape Type of sign What it tells you
Circle Mandatory or prohibitory An order. A red border generally means you must not do something, and a blue circle means you must do it
Triangle Warning (cautionary) A hazard ahead, such as a sharp bend or a school
Rectangle Informatory Information such as parking, a hospital or directions
Octagon Stop Come to a complete halt
Inverted triangle Give way Slow down and let the main road traffic pass

Hand signals to remember

Used along with indicators, and when the indicators are not working. All are given with the right arm.

Turning right

The right arm is held out straight and horizontal.

Turning left

The right arm is rotated in an anticlockwise direction.

Stopping

The right forearm is raised upright outside the vehicle.

Allowing the vehicle behind to overtake

The right arm is held out horizontally and swung backward and forward.

Tips to pass on the first try

  • Start in practice mode. Read each explanation. Understanding the reason is easier to remember than a list of answers.
  • Then move to test mode. The timer helps you get used to answering without help.
  • Do not memorise the position of the answer. Here the options are shuffled every time, and the real test may order them differently.
  • Choose the safest option. When two answers look right, the one that puts safety and other road users first is usually correct.
  • Learn the sign shapes. Knowing that circles order, triangles warn and rectangles inform helps with many sign questions.
  • Practise your mistakes. After a test, use the option to retry only the questions you got wrong.

Good to know

Are these the questions I will get in the real test?

No. These are original practice questions on the same topics. The real test uses your state’s own question bank, so the questions and their wording can differ.

What score do I need to pass?

The pass mark is set by each state and is often around 60 percent, but check the Sarathi portal for your state. Our result screen uses 60 percent only as a rough guide.

How many times can I take the real test?

The number of attempts and the gap between them depend on your state. Check the rules on Sarathi before you book. Our slot booking guide shows how to book or cancel a test slot.

Does the tool save my answers?

No. Everything happens in your browser, and nothing is stored or sent anywhere.
